Loaves & Fishes officially launched 2021 summer programming aimed to feed children with lunch served at Salvation Army Central (2727 Central Ave NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418) yesterday afternoon.

Salvation Army Central is one of seven sites that will run in coordination with our summer internship program and is the only location that is open to the public. Lunch will be served there Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“Quite frankly, July is our busiest month of the year. Our summer sites are crucial to the work we do,” executive director Cathy Maes said. “We like being busy and this is my favorite time of year because we know children are receiving an abundance of free and healthy food.”

Our summer interns have been busy shadowing sites in preparation and took part in a unique opportunity at our commissary kitchen. They participated in a full cooking class that was the first of many in our new “Cooking for All” course.

Located in an area where 91% of youth qualify for free or reduced lunch, “Cooking for All” serves meals onsite, utilizes urban farm produce, and educates staff, volunteers, meal partners, students, Urban Ventures youth and more on how to cook while incorporating low-waste techniques.

“I especially enjoyed the food waste lesson and learning about how to reduce waste within my own kitchen,” one intern told us. “Learning how to cook and measure food waste on a larger scale has prepared me to give back to my community this summer.”
