Food is Medicine

Our holistic recipe for success is predicated on the belief that serving just any kind of food to people in need is unsatisfactory as well as costly to people and communities.

Our meal standards include vegetables, fruits, protein and healthy grain. We are committed to giving our guests a healthy meal experience and our “No Dessert Policy” is a major part of that.

We fill half the plate with vegetables and fruits, use fresh items as often as possible, and consider color, variety and sugar content knowing that dark green, red and orange items pack the most nutrients. Proteins served are a 2-ounce minimum, although we strive for 3-4 ounces. We use whole grain options whenever possible and are conscious of serving size and sugar content of processed grain items.

These same components are incorporated into our food rescue, meal planning for HUB partners, and the types of food we bring to the urban streets of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Did you know that hunger and health are deeply connected? Food insecurity can lead to Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. According to a Loaves & Fishes Guest Survey, one-third of our guests have high blood pressure, diabetes, and/or a heart condition.

Please help us in our mission to provide healthy meals to all our guests.
