Beyond a Meal: What Makes Our Community Unique

Jean is a recurring volunteer. She has been making a meaningful impact since she began volunteering with Loaves & Fishes in September 2022.

As a Site Coordinator or a recurring volunteer, you often see familiar faces and build lasting relationships with guests. She started bringing a few items of clothing along with her as she volunteered. Giving them a new life with guests who had expressed a need beyond a meal. At the start of the school year, Jean took it a step further by helping to provide back-to-school backpacks for a couple of guests about to return to elementary school. Over time, her support expanded to include personal hygiene packages, fresh fruit, lunch bags, and hand warmers.

Her steady compassion did not go unnoticed.

The women of St. Mary’s Guild, who serve the early prep shift at Loaves & Fishes, had been watching Jean’s efforts over several months. Inspired by her commitment, they joined in. They started donating items and contributed 10 bags of clothing in the first year.

The following year, their generosity doubled. St. Mary’s Guild donated twice as many.

This is what Loaves & Fishes is all about: neighbors noticing needs, stepping up, and multiplying impact together.

Meals, Comfort, and Kindness isn’t just what we provide; it’s how we continually work to show up. Behind every meal served is a person with a story, and we work each day to honor that story.

If Jean’s story inspires you, there’s another way to grow your impact: Join our Nourishment Network!

By being a part of our Nourishment Network, you help ensure that meals and moments of care like these continue consistently all year long. A steady gift each month creates the foundation that allows compassion to multiply.
